The hike takes about 3-4 hours and will finally lead you to the idillic village of Valdemossa where you will learn about Mallorcas history while enjoying tapas and music for lunch. Afterwards you will visit the Royal Carthusian Monastery which has its origins back to the time of king James II, who chose this place to build a palace for his son Sancho. In 1399, it was donated to Carthusian monks who occupied the building from 1399 until 1835, when the monks were definitively secularised. The State took on the administration of the monastery, renting out the monastic cells to visitors and holidaymakers from Palma de Mallorca. In 1838-39 the composer Frederick Chopin and writer George Sand came to the village, where they lived in the monastery´s cells for several months. The monastery site was later sold in nine different parts to private owners and this ownership structure is still in force today. Nowadays this monastery is a museum and you will have the pleasure to visit it and to hear a Chopin piano concert.
